HP ProBook 6460b – Sleek Looks At Affordable Price (1)

If you are in the market for a business-oriented laptop that has a durable and sleek look, have a closer look at this HP ProBook 6460b which costs about $800, a fair price tag in our opinion given what the laptop has to offer. It comes with a bead-blast aluminum lid that keeps away smudges and provides the notebook with a sophisticated appearance. As for the rest of the laptop, it is manufactured from magnesium-reinforced ABS plastic.

HP has fitted this model with a bottom-case drain that prevents damages from spills, while the keyboard is also spill-resistant. The 6460b part of HP’s ProBook lineup measures 13.3 x 9.1 x 1.3 inches and tips the scales at 5.2 pounds. Given its sturdy construction, it’s no wonder that this isn’t one of the lightest 14-inch business laptops on sale today, but we prefer a more solid build rather than a lightweight construction, especially when it comes down to these business laptops.

It comes with the usual island-type keyboard which manages to get the job done but it fails to impress us in any way. We do like that the layout is quite spacious but the bad thing is that the keys are entirely flat so the feedback is not as tactile as we would have hoped. In addition, the Backspace button has been shrunken so from time to time you might end up pressing the Home key by accident.

Below this mediocre keyboard is the Synaptics touchpad which measures 3.9 x 1.8 inches and wears a friction-free matte texture that provides a smooth user navigation. As you would expect, this touchpad is fully capable of handling multitouch gestures with a minimal amount of lag. Even so, the clickpad found on MacBook laptops is still way better than this. We didn’t like the left and right mouse buttons as these are quite narrow while the feedback provided is mushy.

The HP ProBook 6460b has been fitted with a 14-inch display that manages to get quite bright and it doesn’t catch glare thank to the fact that it has a matte finish, a popular choice among business laptops while consumer notebooks come mostly with a glossy coating that attracts reflections, making them hard to read in a bright room. The color reproduction is very good but the viewing angles are quite poor, which in our opinion represents an important drawback for a business laptop like this one.

As far as the audio system is concerned, the laptop comes with bottom left-side-mounted speakers that get surprisingly loud and provide a decent amount of depth. These speakers are enhanced by the SRS Premium Sound software and sound great for a business laptop where usually the audio department is ignored by most manufacturers.
