What does the Ethernet port do? It helps you connect to the Internet if you don’t have WLAN access. And usually if you have more computers at home, you also have a -wireless- router with a WiFi connection. But if you are scared that someone might try and hack your Internet connection, you might have turned it off already, thus forcing you to use the traditional wires.

If you proceed with trouble shooting and you realize that the Ethernet port -seen below- got fried, your only remedy is to have it replaced, if you don’t know how.

When such a port stops functioning, no matter the device or machine it is installed on, that’s not a good sign at all. Most of the times it might be one of these 2 situations: it either got fried or the driver crashed and either needs to be updated or downgraded. If you need to upgrade or to downgrade, then the steps to take are pretty easy, since here is a pretty good place to start searching for a driver for your Notebook. You just need to select your laptop mode  and then your operating system and then you can safely download and install the appropriate driver version.

If you can’t connect to the Internet using the cable, try out the WiFi connection and if it works, then you either got some settings messed up, either one of the above issues. Hoping that your settings are wrongly configured, visit this help thread If you run Windows XP still on your laptop, you can try and get more drivers from here as well, if the ones from the official site don’t work for some reason. And for further assistance, you can read this blog, which might put some light on your problem, helping you to solve it. And if everything fails, then you should take your laptop to a service place and have it examined.11
